After describing what Friends are for, (see else where) I will now cover the concept of the Follower.
First of all: a Follower is not the same as a 'friend', in the sense of being a Contact, a Connection, or even someone you know. A Follower is (just) following you, because of something you said, showed, or shared.
The Follower wants a piece of your action; this may be out of interest - like one would expect from a real contact - or it may just be out of plain greed.
Amongst Followers we find people who will copy your text, download (steal) your software, your pictures, and your music; we call this 'sharing'.
There are various types of Followers; I will treat them seperately.
First: we have the followers on Twitter; the 140 character Marvel of Communication.
These are usually the type of persons, that will jump on anything; I call this group thestamp-collectors. They usually follow - former - celebrities (who also seem to have discovered Twitter), TV-personalities, politicians, writers, artists, speakers, you name it.
This group rarely follows anything, but tweets loud; every once in a while they 'respond', but there is rarely any contact. Radiation of Fame, is what drives these people.
However, there is a serious group of followers amongst them; they follow newsgroups, collectives and various other sources of information; they rarely tweet anything, and they usually have few followers.
Second: we consider LinkedIn; this is a so-called Professional Social Network.
Here we see the concept of Connections; this leads to a networking tool concept.
The trick here is, to make as much connections as you can possibly get; this will expand your network, and thus you can 'reach' more people, via "friends from friends", and several degrees of separation.
You can connect to various Groups, and participate in several discussions; considering, LinkedIn is supposed to be a Professional Network, you would be surprised to see the 'discussions'.
Given the fact, that connections 'follow' each other, this leads to a lot of traffic; LinkedIn went to the stock-market.
Third: we consider Facebook; this is to be considered as a Social Network, more like a blog.
On Facebook we can keep some kind of a time-lined-journal; one may post messages, pictures, music, and let anyone know what they are up to.
Well, not just anyone: you have to be a 'friend' to follow anyone; or each other.
Facebook is also the first one, to introduce the concept of Liking, Thumbs-up, +1, and so-on.
Sadly, they also invented the concept of De-Friending; this has led to a lot of mischief.
Nonetheless: also Facebook went to the stock-market.
Fourth: we mention Hyves; this is to be considered as a Social Community, a place where we can - with no shame or guilt - read each others diary.
Here we see the concept of an extended profile; we can show who we are, and what we like.
Hyves is to be considered a childs thing; one would be surprised of the amount of adults, that dwell there.
I am not sure of the fact, if Hyves involves any concept of 'friending', but I think there is; I have never been on Hyves. I consider Hyves a source of child abuse, and it should be closed.
That leaves us with the question: what to think about Followers?
What do they want from us? Why do we follow other people?
Why do some people collect as much followers as they can; or does that just happen?
Why do people love large networks so much?
What can be said about those, who are being followed?
I know this: the more followers, the less important your messages get.
You are just being stalked. Chances are - even - that you are a very lonely person.
If you follow many others, the less important gets the information you gather.
You are just a stalker, in for a penny, out for a pound.
Chances are, you are a psychopate, even.
Followers are different from Believers, ask Jezus.
